Step 1: Apache and PHP on Linux/Unix

Download the sources
The sources may be drawn from the pages:
http://www.php.net  as  *.tar.gz
These may then be stored in the index with the "gtar-xfvz filename" command.

Apache preconfiguration
First change to the Apache directory and then execute the command"./configure".

Compilation of PHP modules
Then change the PHP directory and there either the Programm./setup is called up or the following lines are entered:

--with ftp
Upon request the modul may be compiled with one of the above quoted data bases.
After the command has been successfully finished you can then commence the transmission process with the "make install" command.Then change the Apache directory again.

Compilation of the Apache
In the Apache directory you have to execute the following commands:

./configure
--with-layout=Apache
--prefix=/destination directory/for/apache/
After creating the configuration
you can now transmit and install Apache with the command "make install".

Configuration of the Apache
After the following steps you should find several subdirectories.
In the "conf" subdirectory you will find the "httpd.conf" data which is responsible for the Apache configuration.
In this file look for the following lines:
application/x-httpd-php3 .php3"
Delete the "#" at the beginning of the line and save the data.
Now you can start the newly created Apache with the command "apachectlstart" in the subdirectory. Should you have already started another webserver you must finish the previous one.

Configuration of the PHP modules
The configuration of the PHP-Modules will be set as a default in the /usr/local/lib/ directory. If you cannot find any php3.ini data then you can copy the "php3.ini-dist" from the PHP directory-source directory and then change the name in the php3.ini.
The following lines then must be adjusted in the php3.ini :
magic_quotes_gpc    = Off;
magic_quotes_runtime= Off;
magic_quotes_sybase = On ;
track_vars          = On ;
If you use a MySql
database ,then the following settings also should to be made:
mysql.allow_persistant = On:
mysql.max_persistant  = 9 ;
mysql.max_links       = 30;
The numerical values should comply with the performance strength of the system.
